THE RESIDENTIAL PROGRAM

Campus

The College for Living is located in Louisville, Kentucky near many resources and recreational opportunities, including shopping, entertainment, grocery stores, dining, Norton Healthcare, Bellarmine University, and easy access to TARC transportation route.

Residential students have their own one-bedroom apartment equipped with a full kitchen, living room and accessible bathroom. Typical of dorm-life, residential students have shared laundry facilities and a common gathering area.

Classes

At the College for Living, residential students receive four hours of mentorship and one hour of instruction based on resident interests and focused on developing life skills. Core curriculum includes but is not limited to culinary skills, home economics, communications, financial literacy, and safe living.  Additional educational and recreational opportunities are offered each month. Life Skills mentors lead classes, provide person-centered support, and have diverse backgrounds which provides a well-rounded approach to learning.

Community

An essential part of what we do at College for Living is help our students and their families cultivate relationships that will last them long after they have graduated.

We ingrain that the students are a unit, a family, and we practice this within our building and outside in the community. One of the appealing aspects about the program is our students are never really alone. We encourage our students to lean on each other for support when a staff member is not around. Students are taught to identify strengths and skills within themselves and others to assist one another.

We recognize that our families should not be an island. Everyone needs support and solidarity to help transition their student into independent living. CFL conducts quarterly friends and family events so our students and their loved ones can build bonds with one another and our mentors. We aim to create an environment that is open, authentic and reinforces connections.

Tuition

The College for Living's residential education plan includes:

• ​An initial (as well as periodic) and quarterly assessments of student’s needs and goals.
• ​Regular progress meetings with the College for Living Program Coordinator.
• ​24/7 on-call support for urgent situations.
• ​28 hours per week of direct (on-site) support from Life Skills Mentors.
• ​One class per day Monday-Friday focused on developing independent life skills.
• ​A network of peers and social/recreational opportunities.
• ​Individualized transition plan upon completion of the program.

On-campus Housing 

​Students must qualify for HUD (Housing and Urban Development) housing. HUD-subsidized units: 

• ​Must qualify for very low-income status.​​ 
• Tenant pays 30% of income (earned and unearned income) regardless of fair market rent amount.
